A stranger among them

We've seen that the California Sea Lions tend to pay minimal attention to other creatures such as harbor seals and seagulls. We've also observed the occasional injured sea lion on the K-Docks. Some of these injuries are thought to have been caused by boats. Sea lions in other regions have been known to chase after boats, perhaps thinking of them as toys. But it seems the PIER 39 sea lions fear them a bit.

When a PIER 39 marina boat came by recently because some of the docks needed to be re-tied together, the sea lions made a concerted effort to avoid the worker. Most abandoned the docks surrounding him and once he left they were still skeptical.
Sea Lions are considered “opportunistic feeders,” eating available prey rather than one species.
The average life span of a California Sea Lion is 20–25 years.
